The Saudi thobe is known for its structured, polished appearance and is considered one of the more formal styles of Gulf menswear. Typically tailored with a sharper silhouette than the Emirati kandura, the Saudi Thobe usually features a stiff standing collar, buttoned front placket and shirt-style cuffs, giving it a refined and almost military precision. While white cotton remains the most common choice for daytime and warmer months, darker shades such as charcoal, beige, navy and black are often worn in winter, alongside heavier fabrics like wool blends.
The look is traditionally paired with the ghutra or shemagh ā the square headscarf worn folded into a triangle. In Saudi Arabia, the red-and-white checked shemagh is especially iconic, although plain white ghutras are also widely worn for formal or religious occasions. The headscarf is secured with the agal, the black double-cord headband that sits on top. Styling varies by region and occasion: some men drape the shemagh loosely over the shoulders, while others fold it sharply around the face for a more formal look.
For ceremonial occasions, weddings and state events, the thobe is often layered with a Bisht ā the flowing embroidered cloak associated with prestige, leadership and celebration. Together, the ensemble reflects both practicality and status, while remaining deeply tied to Saudi cultural identity and heritage.
