The Abaya is one of the most recognisable garments in Gulf culture, traditionally worn as a flowing outer cloak that represents modesty, elegance and cultural identity. Historically black and worn over clothing in public spaces, the abaya has evolved significantly in recent years, particularly across the GCC, where younger generations and designers have transformed it into a fashion statement while still respecting its cultural roots. Today, many women wear open-front abayas layered over jeans, tailoring, dresses or activewear, styling them more like lightweight coats or dusters. Luxury fabrics, embroidery, cutwork and contemporary silhouettes have made the abaya a major part of the region’s fashion industry.

The abaya is usually worn with a shayla — the lightweight scarf wrapped around the hair and neck — although styling varies from loosely draped to fully wrapped depending on personal preference, family tradition and occasion. In more formal settings, women may also wear a niqab, which covers the face while leaving the eyes visible.

Differences Across GCC Countries

• United Arab Emirates
  Emirati abayas are often fashion-forward, with flowing cuts, luxury fabrics, embellished sleeves and contemporary tailoring. Open-front abayas worn over Western clothing are especially common in cities such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
• Saudi Arabia
  Traditionally more conservative, Saudi abayas were historically worn closed and fully covering, often with black shaylas or niqabs. Today, styles in cities such as Riyadh and Jeddah are becoming increasingly modern, with coloured fabrics and open styling now widely accepted.
• Qatar
  Qatari abayas tend to be highly polished and luxurious, often featuring premium fabrics, couture detailing and elegant draping. There is a strong preference for refined monochrome styling and elevated accessories.
• Kuwait
  Kuwait has long been influential in Gulf fashion and abaya design, known for trend-led silhouettes, experimental cuts and high-fashion interpretations.
• Bahrain
  Bahraini styles often blend Saudi and Emirati influences, balancing traditional modest dressing with modern tailoring and lighter fabrics.
• Oman
  Omani abayas are generally more understated and traditional, sometimes paired with richly embroidered details inspired by Omani craftsmanship and heritage textiles.

• Open vs closed abayas:
  Open abayas layered over outfits are now common for everyday wear and social settings, while closed styles remain popular for religious occasions, formal events and conservative environments.
• Footwear:
  Open-toe sandals and heels are extremely common across the Gulf, particularly in the UAE and Qatar, where polished pedicures and designer shoes are often incorporated into the overall look. Closed-toe shoes tend to appear in professional, conservative or winter settings.
• Colour:
  Black remains the classic and most widely worn colour due to its elegance and practicality, though muted neutrals, creams, deep jewel tones and seasonal fabrics are increasingly popular in contemporary Gulf fashion.
